Upper cervical spine corrections can help chronic pain relief.
Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy (RSD) Is also known as Chronic Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
Chronic Pain is a widespread problem throughout populations in the industrialized world. “June 29, 2011 — More than 100 million Americans suffer from chronic pain at a cost of around $600 billion a year in medical treatments and lost productivity, according to a report from the Institute of Medicine (IOM)” That is a staggering number when you think about it.
In this article, we would like to discuss one of the major causes of chronic pain. An article that discussed all sources of pain would be voluminous so we will narrow our discussion down to pain that is associated with RSD. Unfortunately, our current health care paradigm is mechanistic in its approach. All too often mainstream medicine is looking at secondary and tertiary causes of pain and disease. The treatment of pain is done with strong pain-killing medications ignoring what may be the underlying causes.
What Are The Symptoms Of RSD?
- Pain areas: in the nerves, arms or legs, back, feet, or hands.
- Pain types: can be chronic.
- Muscular: rhythmic muscle contractions, loss of muscle, or muscle spasms.
- Sensory: pins and needles, sensitivity to pain, or uncomfortable tingling and burning.
Whole-body: nervous system dysfunction or sweating.
RSD typically develops following blunt trauma to one of the limbs. Research published by Hubbard, Forest, And Milman showed improvement in the frequency and severity of RSD symptoms following a course of Upper Cervical Care. (1) Upper Cervical is a procedure whose goal is restoring normal bio-mechanics of the Upper Cervical Spine to restore normal nervous system function. While it is not a cure-all it has shown great promise in a multitude of chronic health conditions. (1,2,3,4,5)
What Does A Upper Cervical Chiropractor Do?
Upper Cervical Doctors are trained to locate and correct subluxations (spinal misalignments in the neck that interfere with the body's function). Neurological tests are performed that determine whether or not the patient has an upper neck subluxation.
Once it is determined a subluxation exists, then a precise set of x-rays are taken to determine how your atlas(c-1) or axis(c-2) has misaligned at the joint. Since the bones in the spine meet at joint surfaces and these joint surfaces are mirror images of one another, the doctor can determine exactly how much you have misaligned and in what direction. After this information is determined. a precise gentle correction is made to restore normal function. Each week that passes that the adjustment is holding allows for healing.
