Most people would never think that a neck injury could be the underlying cause of foot spasms and foot clonus.
However, the Upper Cervical Spine houses the brain stem and this area is responsible for muscle tone control throughout most of the body. Severe neck injuries and head trauma have been known to cause spastic muscles in various regions of the body. This is a sign that a severe irritation exists within the central nervous system and usually is located in the neck.
One of our patients was in a coma following a severe jet ski accident. Following that injury, a host of health problems ensued. He suffered from poor posture, clonus in his foot, and other chronic health problems. Medical Doctors tried to help but the various medications only briefly helped and the side effects were not worth the relief. Eventually, he underwent surgery on the foot where they severed several tendons to “release” the spasms. This ended up failing also. It wasn’t until he had his upper neck corrected at the c-1 and c-2 levels that his life changed for the better.
What is Upper Cervical Chiropractic Care?
Upper Cervical Care is a unique health discipline that focuses on the relationship between the atlas (c-1) and axis (c-2) and the nervous system. This area of the body houses the brain stem which is the seat of control for most body functions. Nerve nuclei exist in the brain stem that controls heart function, respiratory function, thermo-regulation, blood pressure control, muscle tone regulation, and more.
The head weighs 10-12 lbs and rests on the top bone called the atlas(2 oz) and is held together by only muscles and ligaments. This makes it susceptible to injury. As we go through life there are accidents along the way. Sports injuries, slip and falls, car accidents and other traumas can cause injury to the upper neck where it meets the skull. Usually, when it occurs it seems insidious at the time. However, an atlas misalignment of only one millimeter can have devastating effects on the central nervous system. The upper cervical doctor’s goal is to correct these spinal misalignments so the central nervous system can function optimally. When this occurs healing is the response. Our adage has always been “nature needs no help just no interference!”
