As unfortunate as it may be, headaches in children are quickly becoming a common health concern for kids across the US and the globe. In fact, according to one children’s hospital, headaches affect over 40% of children under the age of 7. Additionally, 75% of kids have their first headache by the age of 15. While migraines are far less common in kids, a common headache is experienced by almost everyone. Why is this the case?
As the experts in curing pain related to headaches in both adults and children, we at Upper Cervical Chiropractic of Georgia want to dive into the root causes of headaches in order to figure out how upper cervical chiropractic (as a treatment) can help:
The Causes of Headaches
While the underlying cause of a headache is generally speaking, still not completely understood, many researchers have recognized that many different factors play into headache occurrence. A few of the most common headache causes may include:
- Muscle tightness
- Hormone levels
- Dilated blood vessels
- Dehydration
- Stress
These are just a few of the factors that can attribute to headaches and the pain they cause. What can not be argued, however, is what headaches result in. For many, especially young children, chronic headaches can lead to both general behavioral issues and depression.
Looking to the Neck for Help
Most parents are not interested in the idea of giving their children potentially dangerous medications, prescription or not. While you want to stop their pain, it’s always a smart idea to also search for long-term assistance that can effectively reduce headache occurrence rather than simply waiting until the next one pops up and giving your child another dose of medicine.
Interestingly, a misalignment of the atlas (the C1 vertebrae) can lead to many of the underlying headache problems noted above. This is because a misaligned neck can cause muscle strain. It can also put pressure on the brainstem, which can potentially affect neurochemistry. Additionally, the blood vessels could be affected as the misalignment may be preventing proper drainage.
Even if your child has not suffered a neck or head trauma (due to a fall on the playground, car accident, etc.), the process of birth itself could have resulted in an upper cervical misalignment. Thus, the headaches may simply be just a symptom of an issue that has existed since the day they were born.
