IBS treatment using upper cervical chiropractic can be effective in reducing the symptoms of this condition. Irritable bowel syndrome affects around 15% of the American population. It is associated with abdominal pain, bloating and irregular bowel habits. The latter can unpredictably switch between diarrhea and constipation. So why should upper cervical chiropractic be able to treat this condition?
It does do by ensuring that your neck and upper spine are properly aligned. It is possible to alleviate or even cure many disorders caused by pressure on the spinal cord by reducing or removing that pressure. Chiropractors have had success with IBS treatment, often for those who have tried the traditional medical treatment. Traditional treatment is frequently ineffective with those suffering this distressing condition.
What is the Upper Cervical Region?
The upper cervical region of your spine comprises the top two vertebrae. These are situated right at the top of the neck, immediately below the brain stem. This is structurally continuous with the spinal cord. So the brain stem becomes the spinal cord that passes all the messages from the brain down to the rest of your body.
The vertebrae that make up your spine consist of bones with projection that muscles are attached to. These muscles enable you bend and twist. They also have a hole through the middle that protects the spinal cord. So this thick bundle of nerves leaves the brain into the first vertebra. It then passes into the hole in the second vertebra. This is where trouble can happen.
IBS Treatment Using Upper Cervical Chiropractic
If the top two vertebrae in your neck are slightly displaced, then the spinal cord can be pinched or nipped. It is not passing freely downwards, but is constricted to a greater or lesser degree. Any pressure put on the spinal cord can affect a wide range of bodily functions. The smooth operation of your digestive and water removal system is one of these.
Displacement can occur during childbirth, by whiplash injury or even if have fallen or been in a fight. By realigning these top vertebrae, so your spinal cord can pass freely downward without any constriction or nipping, it is possible to alleviate a number of different conditions. IBS is one of these. That is not to say that all incidences of irritable bowel syndrome can be cured using upper cervical chiropractic but it can help in many cases.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chiropractic
We have frequently been able to reduce the severity of irritable bowel syndrome, enabling patients to lower the dosage of their medication or even avoid them altogether. We are not claiming to be able to cure IBS in all our patients, but we have had success in making their lives easier. There are fewer side effects associated with upper cervical chiropractic than with traditional medicine. It is worth trying – it works for many of our patients.
